Key Events of the Carnival

Throughout the Carnival celebration days, Maspalomas bursts into life with a myriad of activities and festivities as part of the programme to captivate spectators eagerly anticipating these days.

The celebration kicks off in full splendour with the candidates' presentation gala, a dazzling showcase where participants flaunt their most captivating costumes on the grand stage. Following this, the streets come alive with colourful parades, a harmonious blend of music and dance that draws visitors from all corners of the world who delight in the spectacle and actively participate in the festivities.

A pinnacle of the Carnival experience is the costume contests, where originality and creativity reach their peak. Outdoor concerts contribute to the festive atmosphere with contagious music and positive vibes, while art exhibitions and cultural activities provide an enriching exploration of the region's culture.

And, of course, a standout moment marking the Carnival's conclusion is the burial of the sardine. This distinctive tradition brings a humorous and satirical close to the celebration, featuring a procession where a cardboard sardine is ceremoniously paraded to its symbolic "burial," signifying the end of the festivities and the beginning of Lent.

In every aspect, the Maspalomas Carnival caters to diverse tastes and ages, offering a wealth of events. So, seize the opportunity to experience this unique celebration in the world and create unforgettable memories in the heart of Gran Canaria!

History of the Maspalomas Carnival

The Maspalomas Carnival, celebrated on the island of Gran Canaria, stands as a symbol of the harmonious blend between tradition and creativity. Its origins trace back to the 16th century, weaving together Canarian traditions with the vibrant spirit of Spanish carnival celebrations. However, owing to the unique history of the islands, this celebration carries substantial influences from diverse cultures such as Brazilian and Caribbean.

Its origin can be traced to a time when the local community started organising parades and events to commemorate this festivity. Over the years, the carnival has gracefully evolved, steadily gaining popularity and turning into one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year for many. Despite the changes that have shaped its course, the core values of joy, community, and creativity have stood resilient to this celebration.

Carnival Cuisine: Typical Flavours of the Celebration

The Maspalomas Carnival not only offers a visual spectacle but also invites you on an authentic gastronomic journey, offering a diverse array of flavours synonymous with the celebration.

Indulge in traditional dishes like "papas arrugadas con mojo," where potatoes are boiled in salty water and served with a variety of mojo sauces, ranging from the spicy red mojo to the milder green mojo. You can also taste sweet treats such as "truchas de batata," crafted with a hint of lemon and a sweet almond filling. Their unique fish-shaped appearance makes them the perfect snack to enjoy while strolling through the carnival streets.

Let's not forget to mention other iconic dishes that are part of the culinary tradition of the Maspalomas Carnival. From sweet pumpkin pancakes to fritters bathed in syrup or honey and the irresistible "leche frita" (fried milk), each bite promises to transport you to the very heart of Canary Islands culture.
